Anane Agyei, PhD

Executive Director

Dr Anane Agyei is a distinguished Ghanaian scholar in culture, governance, and communication, and the Executive Director of the Busia Institute for Rural and Democratic Development (BIRDD)—a leading think tank advancing democratic governance, rural transformation, and values-based leadership.

Under the patronage of His Excellency Mr J. A. Kufuor, President of the Republic of Ghana (2001–2009), and with strategic support from the BIRDD Board, Dr Agyei has positioned the Institute as a national platform for civic dialogue, policy innovation, and institutional reform.

He holds a BA in English and Information Studies, an MA in Communication Studies, and a PhD in African Studies from the University of Ghana. His doctoral research, Blood Has No Boundaries, explores transnational kinship and identity among the Aduana of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

Dr Agyei has led initiatives in youth empowerment, inclusive governance, education reform, and environmental stewardship. He has  attended major international forums across Africa and Europe.

A prolific author, his publications include K. A. Busia: A Symbol of Democracy (2018), Ghana’s Free SHS Policy: A Strategic Revolution of Minds and Futures (2024), and the forthcoming In Pursuit of the Ghanaian Dream: Presidential Inaugural Addresses in Historical Perspective

Through BIRDD and allied initiatives, Dr Agyei advances a vision for African-led development grounded in cultural pride, ethical leadership, and democratic accountability.
