The Busia Institute for Rural and Democratic Development (BIRDD) is a Ghanaian research, public-policy and civic-education institution established in 2014. Drawing intellectual inspiration from the scholarship and public service of Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia, the Institute promotes constitutional democracy, responsible leadership, informed citizenship and sustainable rural development.

BIRDD examines the political ideas, institutions and policy choices that have shaped Ghana’s democratic experience, while addressing contemporary questions of governance and national development. Its work brings together African political thought, public-policy research, parliamentary and constitutional history, indigenous political authority, leadership studies and the needs of rural communities.

Through scholarly research, publications, the Busia Institute Lecture, civic-learning activities, public dialogue and institutional cooperation, BIRDD seeks to deepen public understanding and connect sound evidence with practical decisions in Ghana and beyond.
