Our Programmes

BIRDD’s work is organised around five interconnected programme pillars represented by the letters of its acronym. Together, they translate the Institute’s core areas – public policy, research, civic education and leadership – into practical work in policy engagement, knowledge exchange, rural transformation, democratic development and heritage preservation. The pillars are mutually reinforcing rather than isolated departments.

Busia Leadership and Public Policy Platform

This platform advances research, dialogue and public engagement on leadership, governance and public policy. It connects multidisciplinary scholarship with practical experience, encouraging careful reflection on constitutional democracy, public administration, institutional reform, parliamentary affairs and ethical leadership.

Knowledge grows through exchange. This programme develops collaboration with universities, research institutes, archives, diplomatic institutions, public bodies and scholars in Ghana and abroad. It supports comparative inquiry, visiting scholarship, international archival work, publications and sustained intellectual exchange.

The Busia Fellowship Programme is its principal residency and fellowship initiative. Through the Fellowship, BIRDD brings together research, governance learning, policy engagement, field immersion and international knowledge exchange within a structured institutional framework.

Rural communities remain central to Ghana’s social, economic and cultural life. This programme promotes practical and evidence-informed responses to questions of education, livelihoods, infrastructure, environmental sustainability, local governance and equitable access to opportunity. It combines community engagement with policy analysis and research responsive to local realities.

A resilient democracy depends upon citizens who understand their rights, appreciate their responsibilities and participate constructively in public life. This initiative promotes constitutional understanding, civic responsibility, democratic participation and youth leadership through structured educational programmes for schools, communities, young people and the wider public.

This programme documents, preserves and interprets Ghana’s political, cultural and institutional heritage. Through archival research, oral history, biography, digitisation, documentary production and public interpretation, it protects historical records, strengthens institutional memory and makes heritage accessible to present and future generations.
