Signature Initiatives &Current Projects
BIRDD’s signature initiatives and current projects translate the Institute’s programme pillars into research, civic education, public engagement, leadership development, rural transformation and historical preservation. Each initiative is presented according to its current stage of development to distinguish established programmes, active projects, initiatives being prepared for launch and long-term institutional ambitions.
Busia Institute Annual Lecture
The Busia Institute Lecture is BIRDD’s principal platform for informed, non-partisan discussion of important national, African and international questions. It brings together scholars, traditional authorities, political leaders, public officials, diplomats, development practitioners, business leaders, civil-society representatives, students and citizens.
Through keynote addresses, expert commentary and public engagement, the Lecture promotes evidence-based discussion, broadens participation in national debate and encourages thoughtful responses to the challenges confronting Ghana, Africa and the wider world.
Voices from the Chamber
Voices from the Chamber: Parliamentary Experience and Democratic Development in Ghana’s Republics documents and analyses the experiences of current and former Members of Parliament, parliamentary officials and other individuals whose work has shaped Ghana’s legislative history.
Drawing upon interviews, archival sources and institutional records, the project preserves perspectives that might otherwise be lost, strengthens parliamentary memory and contributes to scholarship on constitutional democracy and legislative development.
Democratic Development &
Civic Education Initiative
This initiative strengthens constitutional knowledge, civic responsibility and democratic participation through institutional visits, educational programmes, public lectures, youth engagement and accessible learning resources.
It connects schools, communities, young people and the wider public with Ghana’s democratic institutions and constitutional processes, helping participants to understand their rights, responsibilities and role in public life.
Busia Fellowship Programme
The Busia Fellowship Programme is BIRDD’s principal platform for residential research, professional development and international knowledge exchange. Fellows participate in seminars, policy dialogue, institutional engagement, field immersion, mentored research and reflective writing, with Ghana serving as a living site of interdisciplinary and comparative study.
The programme offers three tracks: the Summer Residency Fellowship, the Standard Residency Fellowship and the Extended Research Fellowship. Participants who satisfy the approved academic and programme requirements will receive a BIRDD certificate of completion. The first intake will be announced once the necessary institutional, funding and operational arrangements have been completed.
State of Rural Ghana Report
The State of Rural Ghana Report is being developed as a periodic study of the conditions, opportunities and development priorities of rural communities. It will examine education, livelihoods, infrastructure, local governance, environmental sustainability and community development, and offer practical recommendations to policymakers, researchers, development partners and community leaders.
The findings will also help BIRDD bring communities, public institutions and development partners together around clearly identified priorities. Where specialist support is required, qualified partners will provide the relevant expertise and resources, while BIRDD concentrates on research, documentation and policy learning.
Statesmanship, Leadership &
Heritage Initiative
This initiative documents and examines the lives, ideas and public service of individuals whose contributions have influenced Ghana’s political, social, cultural and developmental history.
Its scope includes political leaders, traditional authorities, diplomats, jurists, scholars, educators, entrepreneurs, civil servants and others whose work offers enduring lessons in leadership and public responsibility. Through biography, oral history, archival research, documentary production and scholarly publication, the initiative strengthens institutional memory and promotes leadership founded upon integrity, service and accountability.
Busia Academic Museum
The Busia Academic Museum Project seeks to establish a centre for scholarship, public education and historical interpretation dedicated to Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia’s intellectual and public legacy within the broader history of Ghana’s democracy and development.
The proposed Museum will preserve publications, manuscripts, photographs, audiovisual collections and other historical materials, while providing exhibitions, educational programmes and research opportunities for scholars, students and the public.
Digital Heritage and
Archives Programme
The Digital Heritage and Archives Programme will support the identification, preservation, digitisation and responsible management of records relating to Ghana’s democratic development, public institutions, leadership history and cultural heritage.
Through appropriate institutional partnerships, it will promote archival conservation, oral-history documentation, photographic cataloguing, digital exhibitions and wider educational access to historically significant materials.
Busia Award
The Busia Award is being developed to recognise individuals and institutions whose work exemplifies scholarship, democratic governance, public service, responsible leadership, rural development, civic education, historical preservation or national development.
Its final categories, criteria, selection process and frequency will be governed by an approved framework designed to ensure merit, transparency and public credibility
