Galamsey and the Future of Rural Ghana: Livelihoods, Environmental Security and the Crisis of Local Governance
Thursday, 10 December 2026 | 9.00 a.m.–12.30 p.m.
Accra, Ghana
How has illegal mining affected farming, water supplies and household incomes in rural Ghana? What can local institutions do to address the harm and support viable livelihoods in affected communities?
The dialogue will open with accounts from affected communities. The discussion will examine how district assemblies, traditional authorities and regulators can work together, how communities can take part in decisions about land and water, and what it will take to restore damaged farmland.
The Institute plans to publish a policy brief setting out the main recommendations and identifying the institutions best placed to act on them.
